I started following Town in 1988 which is when things started to go downhill!!
Highs:
The Sc***horpe & Northampton games where we confirmed promotion and then the championship in 94.
Beating Preston in the league the same season after they knocked us out of the cup, hammered us in the league and John Becks attitutde to football.
Beating Wimbledon and then Watford 4-1 (with James in goal) before losing to Arsenal 1-0 (remember Spink missing his kick with goal gaping?)
Of course Everton last season
Also a game that always seems to stick in my mind was when we beat Burnley 2-1 the season we got relegated from the 2nd. It was about 5 games to go with Burnley in the play-offs and brought 2,500 while we were in the relegation spot and it was expected to be a walkover for them, we were losing 1-0 with about 10 mins to go but won 2-1. At the end the whole ground started singing "we are staying up" and there was a general belief that we would........sadly it never happened!
Lows:
Losing at home to Wrexham with a last minute goal (95 I think). Gutted to lose to your local rivals in the last minute (especially from Bennett!) but it was also the game that I accepted relegation to the 3rd.
Losing last season to Macc. First time we played well for a while but we managed to lose (again last minute goal). That is when I accepted relegation to the conference
Losing 5-1 at Crewe, 1-0 up after 5 minutes and it was "Freddy's Barmy Army" all round the away end, shortly to be replaced by "Throb for manager" and "Fcuk off Davies"!!
Liverpool & Wembley (same season?) - both massive anti-climaxes.
Also gutted that I never went to Bristol Rovers for the area final.
A game which sticks in my mind because I've never been so depressed was when we played Bournemouth on a cold Tuesday night (could have been the season we got relegated from the 2nd). It was a cold wet night and the game was awful (think it was 1-1) and they had R Ferdinand playing for them. The crowd was only 1600 and I could be wrong but there was a mini-protest after the game against Davies. Just the whole wet cold night in front of an awful crowd watching a dire game just made me wonder why I did it

20th February 1988, Vic Kasule cuts in from the wing and unleashes an unstoppable shot, still the greatest goal i have ever seen at an STFC game
My mate was in a nightclub soon after and said to Kasule "That was some goal"
and he replied, over his drink!,
"I just f***ing hit it"
Yes it was a great goal.
Some of Lukes must match them for venom and audacity.

I forgot Derby away, December 28th 83 I think. We won 3-2 after being 3-0 up, but 70 minutes we were awesome.

I think you need to know about the club culture at the time. The fanzine wasn't called a large scotch for nothing you know! Vic Kasule (even as a Telford fan) was noted for his fantastic performances (when he was on song) and hitting more than one (cross) bar. When you are as talented as that you can get away with it. Anyone who breaks a toe whilst doing a somersault to celebrate a goal can't be all bad!!!

Indeed, he was an entertainer out of the old school, e.g. Marsh, Bowles, Worthington
His last few months at the club aside I always got my moneys worth, and more, from watching him play
Very, very talented lad, very intelligent too, but like many others of that ilk he didn't have the other attributes needed to make a success of his football career

Saturday nights only as a drunkard or as a pro Prof? ;D Lol ;D what ARE you trying to suggest? Those were the distant days of my youth when I was out on the town every Friday and Saturday night As has been said the culture at the club was somehwat different in those days and I met and got to know several of the players who were regulars in haunts like the 'Hole in the wall' I can always remember thinking at the time that David Moyes seemed one of the sharpest and level headed of the bunch, no real surprise that he's gone onto bigger and better things

This a great thread to just read through and remember all those great days I totally agree that Wembley was a deep anti-climax, and we were let down by a woeful team selection, it was simply wrong Gary Bennett scoring for Wrexham and running the length of the riverside made me the most angry probably, so inciteful, so ugly, such a thug, still needs a good slap IMO Paul Evans vs Wrexham away from the edge of the box, I got in the wrexham end cos it was cheaper, and from where I was sitting the sight of the Shrewsbury fans was simply awesome, they went totally mental, it was amazing seeing it from the other end of the ground. Fortunately I was young enough to get away with it. Blackburn 4-3 was a rollercoaster of epic proportions, I still shudder when I hear the name Ian Pearce! Browny's goal vs Saints was very special, as was Luke's vs Rochdale, the boys a bit special still remember Darren Currie as a young loan player cutting in, beating about three men and tucking it away, we thought he was going to be a future star, and he's still in the second division! The Macclesfield winner was an absolute hammerblow to the testicles in football terms. So deeply deeply unfair, and it was then that even the most blind Ratcliffe fan knew we were deep in it and there was no way out It is not the hurt of watching shrewsbury town that kills me, it is the hope, the history, the potential, come on you blues!

Random thoughts The good 1. The first half hour against Hull in 2001. As Steve remembers, that was some quite incredible football. How we didn't go 5 or 6 up, I'll never know. 2. The AWS Regional Final first leg. 1-0 down and it's looking hopeless, me, Dad and friends start to leave Riverside to get round to Wakeman to avoid the rush at the end. Look back at pitch to see Mark Taylor hitting a 20 yarder into the net to swing it back a little in our direction. Great, great moment. 3. The second half at Rochdale in the 7-1 victory. Awesome. The bad 1. March-May 2003. 2. Stevenage away, a reminder of how far we'd fallen. 3. The last 3 minutes at Sc***horpe in the cup this season. The most mentally shattered I've been for a long time after a game! The ugly 1. Being attacked by a police dog after the Wrexham game 2. The cartoon cockney who had a verbal tirade against us after the Woking game 3. The challenge that almost broke ThrobsBlackHat in half in the last B&A V ASFC game

Many of each, but I think that the best and worst for me have already been mentioned by Ant and Martin B. Best:- the 1-0 victory at Bristol Rovers to get us to Wembley (the thrill of getting to Wembley exceeded the experience of the day itself). Worst:- Losing 3-2 at home to Northampton in the final match of the season to miss out on the play offs. We were due to be in Tenby the weekend of the play off final at Wembley, and Welsh Shrew and I had already planned the train journey to London and back (fatal mistake!). This was a worse feeling (for me) than relegation last season, as by the time it was confirmed, I think most of us were pretty much resigned to it happening. Meeting my wife and daughter after the Northampton game, my daughter (trying to console Welsh Shrew) uttered those famous words, "Never mind, Gareth, it's only a game!" His reaction can be imagined!!

Going for one that was particularly sad for me without knowing it at the time. I was really looking forward to one particular Shrewsbury game against Bristol City because I would get the chance to see a Reading hero play again - Dean Horrix of the magical Horrix and Senior partnership. Took my Reading scarf to wave out of the box so he could see it too - which he did. Little did we all know that just a few hours later he would be dead. I was proud to have seen him play for us, devasted to see his last game, but thankful at having had one last opportunity to see him play too.

3. The challenge that almost broke ThrobsBlackHat in half in the last B&A V ASFC game There was a split second look of horror, then everything went in slow motion, then i was looking at the sky! good job my robocop shinpads did their job! For the three seconds it took before i opened my eyes i was slightly concerned i may have died! but then I saw Ant Thomas rather than St Peter, so i figured i was still there

TBH, I was just about to post and then I noticed that you've knicked almost all of my highs and lows! I'll always remember that 'goal' that Currie had disallowed when the ref blew his whistle with the ball in mid air!

Millwall at home I believe!
I was going to post about that too. Only time I've not seen anyone leave the ground until the referee left the pitch so he could receive the reaction he deserved.
The whistle actually went as it had passed the keeper and was heading in.

;D Beating Birmingham 2-0 at St. Andrews last game of Season to stay up in old Div 2. ;D Evos goal Wrexham away. ;D 5-1 wins home and away v Huddersfield one season. ;D Beating Ipswich's "Escape To Victory" extras 2-1 after getting Sir Bobby's autograph down by the dugouts. ;D Necking those Newcastle Browns in the Telepost on Boxing Day Wembley The Northampton play-off miss out debacle Unlucky loss to Chelsea FA Cup 3rd Round with surreal white pitch, orange ball and pink lines and especially the agony of my frozen feet afterwards. Getting punched in the head by some 10 year old glue-sniffing Scallies in the car park from hell near Goodison on the way to watch Town getting shat on in the FA Cup 5th (?) round. Having had to spend more than 1 second of my life in Walsall

Gary Bennett scoring for Wrexham and running the length of the riverside made me the most angry probably, so inciteful, so ugly, such a thug, still needs a good slap IMO That is the only time i have felt like running on the pitch and tw*ting a player - it made me physically sick. The remaining away games last season hurt, even before the fat lady sang The highs were 1993/94 after the first 5 games, the wimbledon & Everton FA Cup games and Lincoln in the LDV last year
