It has to be said that Shrewsbury Town ARE the biggest club in the League. Look at the fantastic away support again. Prob a record crowd at Witton's ground for any NV game. All these Conference clubs are benefitting financially from our visits. Town are the club they most want to entertain.

Totally agree - we are the best thing that has happened to this league for ages!!! No matter what these jealous conf guide lot say, we ARE the biggest team in this league - i hope they enjoy it for the single year that the're going to benefit from it... STFC - on LOAN to the conference - 1 year only!!! (Then we back to being small fry again so lets enjoy being the big boys for a while)!!!!! I sure some saddo on the conf guide board will post a link to this and call us arrogant but what the heck !!!!

I have to agree with you. Yes you are the biggest club in this league. Biggest crowd with the biggest heads to go with it too.
I've a feeling you're going to round a little bit longer than predicted. Oh and Carlisle will be bigger than you come next season.

I very much doubt that Carlisle will take anywhere near as big an away support as we have done on numerous occasions this season. Still we will wave on the way past as you go down and we return to the Div 3

mmmm, so what's the prize for the biggest team in the league? Is it automatic promotion?, that'll be good for you if it is. I've not seen it publicised anywhere yet though.
Sheffield Wednesday are also sure to get promotion from Div 2, because they will surely be using the same criteria???
Guys, its great you get big crowds, really lovely, it was disappointing that one person yesterday wanted to sing derogatory songs about Northwich, after they swapped the ground round for you. What would you have done if they had restricted your attendance and made the game all-ticket???
I think you should all learn to realise that you are here on merit and you will move on from here on merit. It wiull have nothing to do with the number of fans you have, the number of porsches in the car park, whether your ground has a hotel or whether you don't have a ground at all!
Perfromances on the field are what people will be judged by, and on that basis, much as I hate to say it, Chester City are the biggest team in the league right now.
You may find people take a better approach to you if you accepted what has happened to you, remember the good times you have (for however long you are in the conference) and perhaps reflect on how to be gracious in victory.
Yeovil Town and Wycombe were always well-supported non-league teams, it didn't stop either of them from being relegated from the Conference before they finally got into the league!

I am talking about Shrewsbury being the biggest draw in the League as I thought my post made obvious. Are you seriously suggesting that Shrewsbury will be relegated from the Conference

At last a post with some commonsense in it. I'm not referring to the bit about my club but sometimes the fans at STFC do seem to come over on the www as not fully understanding the predicament last seasons relegation put you in. The previous poster is absolutely spot on with his assessment of your situation.

I often get this feeling when reading the posts on this board from other clubs supporters - people see what they want to see. I don't think anyone in this thread has said that Town are the BEST team in the league, that is surely Chester the way they are playing at present. But we are the biggest draw, just look at the attendances that we are getting at home as well as away, regardless of performances. I also haven't seen any Town poster saying that we will win the league because we have the biggest support, it may help though. In reply to the criteria laid out in an earlier post whilst I would agree that our ground is not the best in the conf. I suspect that our finances are up there with the best, the quality of the players is also up there on the evidence I have seen and the support is out on it's own.

There were no criteria laid out in an earlier post, just drawing on the differing circumstances certain clubs find themselves in within the conference.
The point was, that whether good or bad, these "criteria" have no bearing whatsoever on whether you get promotion or not!!

I think you'll find the inference of having a big crowd was a measure of assured success on the pitch was more very thinly veiled

I think you'll find the inference of having a big crowd was a measure of assured success on the pitch was more very thinly veiled So you are making inferences into what you believe someone wrote as aposed to what they actually wrote? There is nothing which states what you believe in the original posts. The original posts say nothing about how many fans we have at home/ take away with us and any potential link between our league position/ performance on the pitch etc. I'd be very very dissapointed to find any Shrewsbury fan who believed otherwise - and there is nothing on this thread to make me believe there is one. The point made was that STFC has boosted attendances in the Conference and has given several clubs big pay days due a large travelling attendance.

Ant, they made their decision to dislike us in June, you ain't gonna reason with em i'm afraid
for every Shrewsbury fan who is pleased with our attendances there is a Telford fan who says they have a lovely ground and are "geared for league football", which doesn't make the slightest difference either
I am proud to be part of a well supported football team and fans community
other clubs don't have the same, and so they simply don't understand
every Northwich fan i saw and those on their messageboard thanked us for coming, behaving well and giving them some much needed cash, and wished us well
if only our more local rivals understood what it means when your visit can actually benefit another club
that isn't arrogance, it is benevolence

throbs your missing the point once again!
my point was that shrewsbury arent necessarily the biggest club in this league becasue they have good attendances - and yes your travelling fans do help clubs and offer them a good pay day so well done for that.
your points throb could all be countered as your bracketing all telford fans into one - i dont hate shrewsbury and hope you get your new ground and know when i see away fans or i am one im nice to the opposing fans out of common courtesy. your proud of your attendances, you should be, were proud of our ground, we should be.
its rivalry and were both gonna get sick of each others bragging about different thing.
my news years resolution is to not bother with what shrewsbury are doing but to concentrate on supporting my team (although ive always done this!)
good night!

Nice one Lee
the problem is your initial point is not something any footie fan with 20% of a brain would claim, so why make it?
thing is tho, for every one person who write sense there are some who talk cack, and then we end up defending a position no-one ever really claimed
No shrewsbury fan can possibly think our crowds mean success
no telford fan can possibly think a new ground guarantees success
part of my post about "local rivals" was aimed at Chester too, who have an awful ground and not enough fans
at least TUFC got a decent ground!

Throbs, you guys are going into paranoid mode again...
I don't think that everyone hates you, probably the opposite in fact. I think you guys want to be disliked by the way you are carrying on.
You concur exactly with my thoughts, the only thing that influences promotion are perfromances on the field of play. The new ground at Telford is no more a guarantee of success than your 2,500 travelling fans or the fact Northwich are lodging with their bitter rivals.
I think its great that you get massive crowds home & away, I should think that it will be a 5000-6000 crowd at NBH. I think its also good that sides like Northwich realise that and accomodate you by opening the ground up for you. Bear in mind that you were in the same position as them last season.
I think that fans should also realise that there is a lot of history in the conference, it was actually around long before you guys got there. Arranging a post for fans to sing about Witton Albion at a Northwich game is never going to go down well, especially after they were so good to you.
The issue is the way some Shrewsbury fans seem to think they are bgger than the conference. I know it must be hard after all the heroic performances, particularly in the 70's and 80's, but the club has gone into deep decline. I think you should realise that being in the conference is not actually that bad and that it's not that easy to get out of.
As I have said many times, I want to see both Shropshire teams do well, its good for us all. Mid eighties was great because you guys were in whats now division 1 and we were having cup runs all over the place, it was fantastic.
I used to come along to the meadow when there was no TUFC match during the era of Dougie Bell, Alan Irvine etc. etc.
I really hope you get your ground ASAP and I still say that the two clubs should have looked more closely at a groundshare somewhere along the new A5, with its good road and rail links. It would have made financial sense for both clubs, maybe even have had a bit of a retail park thingy there too..
I think you will get 2 sides of the ground at NBH, it'll be interesting to see.
I finish by wishing you all a very happy new year and hope that you accept being in the conference with less "arrogance" in the second half of the season!!

Surely the size of a club is measured upon their attendances and history. Thus Wolves have always been called a sleeping giant. STFC can be the biggest club in the conference, whilst still not being the best. "I think that fans should also realise that there is a lot of history in the conference, it was actually around long before you guys got there. Arranging a post for fans to sing about Witton Albion at a Northwich game is never going to go down well, especially after they were so good to you." I'm sure this thread was started , as a bit of banter to have with Northwich. However if you had read the thread, instead of just manipulating the one post, you will have seen that this idea was rejected. Infact I'm struggling to recall any Town fans singing "Going down..." etc. Infact on the way out of the ground i saw quite a few Town fans chatting with Northwich fans. "The issue is the way some Shrewsbury fans seem to think they are bgger than the conference. I know it must be hard after all the heroic performances, particularly in the 70's and 80's, but the club has gone into deep decline. I think you should realise that being in the conference is not actually that bad and that it's not that easy to get out of." Actually I only know of STFC being a modest club struggling in div2 and then being plain average in div3. And i'm afraid I would have to say that in no way is the Conference anywhere near the general standard of div3. And I'm sorry I don't count the odd FA Cup shock as proof that there is very little difference.

. Arranging a post for fans to sing about Witton Albion at a Northwich game is never going to go down well, especially after they were so good to you. "Arranging" a post is a bit of a strong way of putting it over, IMHO. As the person who "arranged" (i.e. created a thread on a public message board) said post, the idea was meant to be good-natured, but with the mild undertone of a wind-up (No-one could say the Telford Family is totally free of offensive material could they?). I have the utmost respect for Northwich's fans, who put on a very brave show at the Meadow, and sang their nuts off in the face of an overwhelming home crowd. Now the games are done, I personally wish them the best of luck in getting a few spots up the table over the coming months. Although it doesn't excuse it all, I'm still finding my feet within the Shrews' online community, and you'll note that the longer-serving members went someway to redress the balance within said thread, and for that, they have my respect and thanks. As it went, on the day, I certainly did not join in any chants of "Going down", or other such negative songs. If there's humble pie to be eaten, give me the biggest slice, but don't throw it in the faces of everyone else here. And please refer to blueandamber.proboards22.com/index.cgi?board=general&thread=1072462317&action=display&start=15for my earlier comments regarding the Vics . Regards, Grinfish - who now knows better!

I feel that part of the reason why certain STFC fans bang on about "huge" attendances, is that they are so (pleasantly) surprised by them. Why, in Rowley's name, are we turning out in such numbers when the team's in the Conference, and (apart from the odd patch or game) hardly setting it ablaze?
Would that the people of Shropshire had been so willing during our glory days (as mentioned earlier) of the 80s, then we might've stood a better chance of extending those days. Just a glance at the home attendances during the two seasons 1983-84 and 1984-85 (our highest ever league placings, when we finished 8th in the old Division 2, and frequently flirted with promotion) reveals plenty in the 3,000s and even a couple below 3,000.
Do we prefer failure to success?

A very good point Selleck, defies logic really. Same could be said about us boys in Telford, reached round 5 of the cup in 1985, took well over 10,000 "fans" to Everton, average attendance still only about 1,400 for league games.
Perhaps the expectation of scoring a bucketful of goals against some opposition is arousing the interest??
