Brian Clough - league titles with clubs the size of Derby and Forest. Forest winning the league in their first year up. Smallest ever city to produce a European Cup winning side, which he did by and large with journeymen players. And as the song goes - they went to Europe, they won the cup twice. That's as often as they've managed at 'the world's biggest club' after countless tries.
And he Derby to the semis.
He also produced a number of attractive sides with great disciplinary records who respected the decisions of match officials and were pretty popular nationally outisde the East Midlands and South Yorks coalfield. He also usually got an ovation from home fans on his way round to the dugout at away games. Despite being an arrogant bloke he was regarded as a national treasure.
Mourinho's an excellent coach, but not yet in the same class as Clough. How many of Chelsea's key players this season have been signed by Mourinho? He's been extremely fortunate to inherit a very good squad and a bottomless pit as far as transfer fees and salaries are concerned.
Also, how amusing is it to hear Chelsea continually moaning about diving and cheating in Europe - did anyone watch Porto on their way to either the UEFA cup or Champions League? The worst in living memory.

Clough was amazing no doubt, his achievements with 'small' clubs were superb and i can't see anyone matching his feat.
However, Jose is proving himself to be an amazing manager. Portugese champions, Portugese cup, UEFA cup, European Cup, League cup and now seemingly the Premiership and a semi final in the champions league in successive seasons. People are questionning his behaviour etc, but then again he was right over Barcelona and frisk and defended his innocence, and hasn't actually done anything wrong, its just the media speculating.
I personally feel Wenger is a superb manager, his eye for spotting talent is amazing and considering the lack of funds arsenal have in comparison to chelsea and united, he's done really well to get them challenging.

when Chelsea win the Champs cup, as its a case of when not if,
He'll have won one more european cup than Fergie.
How many managers can boast achieving what they achieved with a side like Porto, before coming to a foreign country and doing the same again?
Ok the man is full of himself, but at 41, speaking 5 languages, being paid £5/6million a season and having already won a sack full of competitions wouldnt you be full of yourself?
And to be fair to him, he does hand out praise, he was quick to praise Norwich a few weeks ago for the way they tried to take the game to Chelsea, and is quick to admit their luck on occassions.
I maybe wrong, but I can't really recall Chelsea players harranging the refs like Man United/Arsenal other players do.
Having said all this no doubt i'll think he is a s**tter in a season or two. ;D

yeh good point, can't remember seeing chelsea running around and chasing the referee around the pitch this season, unlike some other teams.
And while mourinho refuses to talk to the media in european competitions, when was the last time alex ferguson talked to the bbc?

That's a very good post H_M_A and a very good point about player discipline, a very sharp contrast to Arsenal and Manchester...maybe that’s why many people are warming to Jose and Chelsea, cos they play the game in the right spirit?
I can't say I'm as confident as you about Chelsea winning the Champs League though, AC Milan look a very decent bet...

Sorry, but if you watch Chelsea, Terry and Duff are always on the ref's case - it's like watching Robbie Savage or Craig Bellamy try and ref games.
Also, did you see Glenn Johnson giving the lino non-stop grief when City played at the Bridge. This is on record as being one of Mourinho's tactics - getting his subs to pressurise the lino's.
And the hypocrisy of moaning all week in the London press about Ballack's dive in the 1st leg when Terry spent a week banging on in the papers about how much the Chelsea changing room had be laughing when they saw tv footage of Calvarho's foul on the Barca keeper. Almost as hypocritical as Mourinho moaning about diving and time wasting - two key aspects of his team's play at Porto.
And Mourinho has been gracious when Chelsea have won i.e. when they humped us 4-1 at the Cottage. But it's easy to be nice when you've just picked up three easy points against an accommodating side. The real judge of the man will be when things aren't going quite so well.

He has also been very fortunate with RED ROM, this guy will get bored of his involvement with celsea very soon and will drop them like hot cakes, if people can remember only a 2 years ago chelsea were in the same prediciment of Leeds and wrexham, nearly having to sell stamford Bridge to survive. wonder what the wage bill would do to Chelsea if Rom decided tyo leave today.....

He has undoubtably done a good job, but it's worth remembering that if it hadn't been for some bizarre substitutions in the semi's last season, then Ranieri would have taken Chelsea to the CL final with a weaker squad.
It's not like he's taken over Cambridge and worked miracles overnight. People need to get a bit of perspective as far as he's concerned. it's embarrassing the way people fawn over him.

Aaahh, the passion of man who hates his rival team with a vengence. Keep it coming Kilburn, im with you on this one.
People fawning over Mourhino is to be expected i suppose because he's different and a bit of a maverick.
He is also very one dimensional despite his intelligence. The guy is cruising for a fall, its just a matter of time of how long we have to wait to witness it.

Out of interest, should Chelsea win the CL, has any manager ever won the trophy with two seperate clubs before?
