I've seen a lot of comments about Shrewsbury being a backwater, nothing to do etc.
Those of you currently at college/uni - do you intend to stay in Shrewsbury after you graduate or is the town turning into an inland Eastbourne?
Is the loss of young people a political issue?

I can invisage myself living the latter part of my life in Shrewsbury but after leaving University I intend to continue to stay living away from Salop for quite some time.

No way.
IMO Shrewsbury is a nice place to visit now and again (i.e. to see the parents and go to the footy ;D) but the place is too boring for me.
The town lacks sports facilities to the max.
There is also a lack of job opportunities for people wishing o progress, again this puts me off completely leaving in Shrews when i have finished Uni.

I finished uni and fully expected and hoped to stay in town but jobs as town planners (beyond the Council) were pretty limited. I kept looking and applied fo a number of jobs within drivable distance but after a year decided I'd had enough and would apply for jobs anywhere in the country. I applied for jobs in Yorkshire, Northampton, Norfolk, Devon and everywhere in between. It took me just 4 weeks after I'd decided to leave to get a job and ended up in Essex of all places (where I'd never even been before my interview!!) Three and a half years on and I'm still here.
There's very few opportunities in the town and, let's be honest, it isn't the most excting place to live. I still love going back for footy, friends / family etc but being away makes going back that much more fun

haveing just finished uni and been traveling - i was desperate to get away from shrewsbury as soon qs possible, if you spend any amount of time liveing and travleing anywhere apart from shrewsbury it shows ou how small, backwards and poor the town is as a whole.
Consequentl i move to Birmingham (for work) in the new year and will still come home to see the footy and family but little else would atract me back to shrewsbury in the future. And it hurts me to see that this is the way it is with the town where i was born and raised
ps i cant even get in a dentistis in shrewsbury anymore and have to go to malpas (other side of whitchurch) to go to one - another of the towns increasing problems!!!
PPS southeast shrew - its good to see that im not the only planner on this board ;D Im about to start as a Transport planner for a company called Faber Maunsell -and like you i would have had no chance of finding a job like that in town

I would only move back now if the job comes up but the grade i'm at means there is only one position available unless the boss leaves which would double my chances, but only really centered on moving to Shrews for the football

I'd move back to Shropshire but not the town itself. Too badly run for my liking, it'd only be family or footy that would be the slightest bit of a reason to come back.
Spending Christmas in North West Leicestershire, and reading the local paper it's far more refreshing in terms of local councillors' reactions to sport etc, shows just how different things can be.

If I moved away from Shropshire my quality of life would decrease. It may happen if people meet my "exhorbitant" demands (£50K pa if anyone is reading this).
If there was a god this would be his county for so many things other than football. Wenlock Edge. The Long Mynd. Caer Caradoc. The 1000s of years of history all around us. And a way of life that is on a more human scale and pace.
Computer games, gyms, fast cars, faster women, office politics - at the end of the day it is no bad thing to celebrate the simple life. Throw away your bourgeois concerns!

Personally, I kinda like the simple life, although it includes sky, the internet and computer games (sorry Sean!).
And that's why I'm determined to eventually move back to Welshpool (ok, not Shrewsbury but even smaller!).
Quiet, little crime, beautiful scenery, clean air are all high on my list, so I'll be happy to return here one day.

I'm at uni up north and I really miss shrewsbury when I'm not here. I didn't think I would but it's nice to be home when I'm on holiday from uni, it makes me realise it's not such a bad place after all.

I went to uni and graduated in 2001 with a job lined up with Accenture the I.T. consultancy
I came to Shrewsbury for a year out
I am still here
But I love the way my life is and I wouldn't change it or live anywhere else for the moment, the only difficulty is the idiots who appear to be running our town

Dare I say it but I have probably travelled the most. I have been to 84 countries and know Paris and Tokyo better than Oswestry and Ludlow.
Shrewsbury needs... a proper concert hall to attract visitors a 2nd out of town shopping mall (forget meole and harlescott) a proper train service directions to it from major motorways more small housing for younger people - why are all these executive appartments springing up everywhere someone to take the councillors to OTHER towns and cities and educate them on how things are done...ie residents street parking etc. Shrewsbury needs a big global company like Vodafone or Orange to have a call centre or somewhere to increase the job capacity and thus putting something back into the community - something to attract people to the town and not repel them away - the way Morris and the like control the Town is almost mafia-like a fully complete ring-road more indoor and outdoor sports centers More late night bars in a more centralised district.. more varied niteclubs a BIG university campus site from wolverhampton uni.

I have always lived in shrewsbury and I really don't like the place. I find it backwards an boring. The pubs all seem to be clones of each other and the main night club is awful but people tend to have little choice but to go there.
Look at Telford for example, I spent many an afternoon in Telford as a kid as there were things to do there, such as:
-A decent play park for the kids -an ice rink -they had a bowling alley long before us -they had a multiplex cinema long before us -they have great sports facilities -and there is easy access to everywhere you need to go by train -Also they have an international centre where I watched a world snooker final last year.
OK now lets compare it to shrewsbury:
-the flower show -erm -wait a minute -ooh nearly had one -there must be something else? -can we count buskers? -lots of old buildings!!!!......... but hang on Ironbridge is part of telford so that doesn't count -my head is hurting -nope thats it. I'm stumped
Do the council realise that they are forcing young people with good qualifications to go elsewhere? the average population of the town must be over 60 already. and how many of us live in shrewsbury and work in telford? I would hazard a guess its a lot more then people who live in shrews and work in shrews

and dont forget the obstrustion/we dont need one of those before the cinema went ahead
time i think to drag Shrewsbury into 21st Century
similar problems over here as Shrews nothing to do / nowhere for the kids to go so they end up on the street drinking / smkoing and generally being anti social

From somone who lives in the deepest, Darkest Shropshire my intention to move to Shrewsbury (the big city ;D ) must seem quiet odd to some out there.
From reading the posts, it seems apprent that most who have been to uni or experienced the big wide world see many of Shrewsbury's shortcomings on a wider scale, which I'm sure will only help the development of the Town in the future. For the time being though much of the Town is run by old boys networks and people who have lived here all there lives.
Shrewsbury does need a kick up the backside, but life is not all about pubs, clubs and attractions and for the moment, Shrewsbury will do me just fine.
